NPR is seeking a skilled and creative journalist to serve as the Supervising Senior Editor for Weekend Edition and Up First. Weekends are special, and NPR's Weekend Edition digs into the news of the week with a distinctive, thoughtful approach, and also offers probing cultural conversations and pops of whimsy and joy. We are looking for a supervisor who is journalistically ambitious and an inspiring, supportive team leader.

The Supervising Senior Editor takes a leading role in programming the Weekend Edition broadcasts on both Saturdays and Sundays, assigning coverage of major news stories, guiding thoughtful explanatory journalism and ensuring that both broadcasts are textured, smart and lively. The ideal candidate for this position will believe deeply in the responsibility of public service journalism. They will be interested in news and eager to deliver the freshest, most important stories to listeners. They will be comfortable providing editorial guidance and offering feedback to editors, producers and hosts at every experience level. They will be able to respond quickly during breaking news, oversee planning and execution of ambitious projects, series and host remotes, and work closely and productively with staff in deadline situations.

This role is based in Washington, DC and has a Wednesday-Sunday work schedule.

This is an NPR editorial role covered under the terms of the NPR Ethics Handbook. All editorial staff are bound by this guidance.

Responsibilities

  • Tracks the ongoing flow of news and recommends specific stories, angles and areas of coverage for Weekend Edition; acts as liaison with NPR desks and podcast teams.
  • Supervises regular and temporary program staff by creating and managing work schedules and assignments and offering regular feedback and guidance.
  • Assists Executive Producer in programming informative, timely, textured broadcasts each weekend.
  • Assists Executive Producer in monitoring the program for editorial and journalistic integrity, continuity and quality of air product.
  • Provides guidance to staff and monitors and evaluates staff performance.
  • Plans, assigns and oversees signature projects and series.
  • Fills in for Executive Producer as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • At least 3 years experience managing direct reports in a journalism newsroom or operation
  • At least 10 years experience creating journalism content as an editor or producer

Preferred Qualifications

  • Editorial leadership experience at a daily or weekly newsmagazine program.
  • Experience line producing or line editing a news broadcast.
  • Control room experience in both pre-programmed and breaking news situations.
  • Deep understanding of the public radio ecosystem.

Education Requirement

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience

Work Location

  • On-site: This is an on-site role based in Washington, DC.

Required Skills

  • Excellent news judgment and ability to make decisions under pressure.
  • Experience in maintaining editorial standards across various platforms such as video, social media, broadcast, etc.
  • Experience balancing daily demands with medium-and long term projects.
  • Excellent communication and people management skills, including constructive feedback, clear communication and conflict resolution.

Job Type

  • This is a full time, exempt position.

Compensation

Salary Range: The U.S. based anticipated salary range for this opportunity is $150,000-165,000 annually, plus benefits. The range displayed reflects the minimum and maximum salaries NPR expects to provide for new hires for the position across all US locations.

Benefits: NPR offers access to comprehensive benefits for employees and dependents. Regular, full-time employees scheduled to work 30 hours or more per week are eligible to enroll in NPR's benefits options.
